Was the Fast-track Bill created to bypass corruption?
In Dr Muriel Newman's latest article she reveals what seems to be corruption by Iwi and Forrest and Bird. Here's some main points from her article:
2010: Meridian Energy seek resource consents. Ngai Tahu object based on "their mana would be damaged" but then change their mind after Meridian give them money.
2019: Te Rarawa hapū disrupted a mussel harvesting business that had been in operation since the 1970s. Without proof, they claimed mechanical harvesting was damaging toheroa beds and leading to a decline in numbers. NIWA research showed the impact was minimal and previously, in 2015, a Waikato University report identified poaching as the main problem.
2023: Meridian and Genesis have spent more than $180M on re-consenting their Waitaki hydro scheme which includes payments to three Ngai Tahu hapu, the Department of Conservation and others in exchange for supporting the application.
